Mastocytosis is a condition where certain cells in the body, called mast cells, grow in excess and can cause symptoms like itching and skin flushing. This study focuses on two types of mastocytosis: isolated cutaneous mastocytosis, which affects the skin, and indolent systemic mastocytosis, which involves the skin and other parts of the body. The purpose of the study is to see how well a medication called hydroxychloroquine works in reducing symptoms like itching and flushing in people with these types of mastocytosis.
Hydroxychloroquine is a medication that is usually taken in the form of a tablet. In this study, it will be given at a dose of 6 to 6.5 mg per kilogram of body weight each day. The study will last for 12 months, during which the effects of the medication on symptoms will be observed. The main goal is to see if there is a change in symptoms from the start of the treatment to the end of the 12 months. Additionally, the study will look at other symptoms like diarrhea and joint pain, as well as the safety of the medication.
Another medication, Xylocaine with adrenaline, is mentioned, but it is not the main focus of this study. The study will also explore the relationship between the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine and its levels in the blood. The results will help understand if hydroxychloroquine can be a useful treatment for people with these types of mastocytosis.
