Friedreich's Ataxia is a rare genetic disorder that affects the nervous system and movement. This study is focused on testing a medication called dimethyl fumarate, which is being evaluated for its effectiveness, safety, and how well it is tolerated by patients with Friedreich's Ataxia. The medication is provided in the form of gastro-resistant tablets known as Skilarence. In this study, some participants will receive the actual medication, while others will receive a placebo, which looks like the medication but does not contain the active ingredient.
The main goal of the study is to see how dimethyl fumarate affects certain proteins and genes related to Friedreich's Ataxia. The study will also look at other health measures, such as heart and lung function, and any side effects that may occur. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the medication or the placebo, and neither the participants nor the researchers will know who is receiving which treatment. This is known as a "double-blind" study, which helps ensure the results are unbiased.
The study will take place over several weeks, with regular check-ups to monitor the participants' health and any changes in their condition. The researchers will compare the results from those taking dimethyl fumarate with those taking the placebo to determine the medication's effectiveness. The study aims to provide valuable information that could lead to better treatment options for people with Friedreich's Ataxia in the future.
