Sickle cell disease is a genetic condition that affects the red blood cells, causing them to become misshapen and leading to various health problems. This study focuses on a treatment called lovotibeglogene autotemcel, also known as LentiGlobin BB305 Drug Product for sickle cell disease. This treatment involves using a patient's own blood stem cells, which are modified outside the body using a special technique called a lentiviral vector. The goal is to introduce a healthy version of the gene responsible for sickle cell disease into these cells.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the long-term safety and effectiveness of this treatment in individuals with sickle cell disease. Participants in the study have already received the treatment in a previous clinical trial. The study will monitor participants over an extended period to assess any potential side effects and to determine how well the treatment works in reducing symptoms and complications associated with sickle cell disease.
Throughout the study, researchers will keep track of various health indicators, such as the occurrence of immune-related issues, changes in blood disorders, and any new or worsening neurological conditions. They will also observe the frequency and severity of pain episodes related to sickle cell disease. The study aims to provide valuable information on the long-term impact of this innovative gene therapy approach.
